Black Bean Burgers

Black Bean Burgers. Yummy, yummy! They are the perfect food to make and serve for the summer, which is only about a week away. Truthfully, I love summer so much that I’ve been making summer recipes since the beginning of March. Even though we are technically still in the spring season, it is summer for me because once school is out and vacations begin to happen, that is what I always consider to be summertime. I truly don’t go by the June 20th start date. Starting summer recipes at that time is far too late for me.

With that being said, I sure hope you all are enjoying these summer recipes that are on this site. I am so excited to be able to share my delicious Black Bean Burgers with you. They are easy to make and even easier to devour. These Black Bean Burgers have a delightful texture. They are perfect to the bite and are not too dense nor are they too mushy.

  • 15 ounces black beans, drained and mashed

  • 2 tablespoons burger seasoning

  • 2 tablespoons reduced-sodium soy sauce

  • toppings and condiments of choice

Directions

  • In a large skillet over medium-high, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Sauté onions for about 4 minutes, stirring continuously.
  • Add the sautéed onions to the mashed black beans. Then add burger seasoning, ketchup, soy sauce, garlic powder and bread crumbs or pulsed oats. Mix together until well combined.
  • Form into 4 equal sized patties.
  • In the same skillet used to cook the onions, cook the patties over medium-high heat for 4-5 minutes per side.
  • Remove from the skillet and allow to rest for 10 minutes before serving and enjoying with a bun, toppings and condiments of your choosing. Enjoy!

Notes

  •  Adjust spices to your taste buds.

For this recipe, I mixed together sautéed onions, mashed black beans, burger seasoning, ketchup, soy sauce, garlic powder and bread crumbs. The breadcrumbs are what I used to bind the black bean patties together. The breadcrumbs make these patties not gluten free. However, to make the black bean patties gluten free, simply substitute the breadcrumbs with pulsed quick oats. You won’t be able to taste the difference. I would have used them in this recipe, but did not have any on hand.

After forming the mixture into patties, I then seared them in a hot skillet for about 4 to 5 minutes per side. If you wish to cook your burgers in a different way, then certainly feel free to do so. Sear them, Grill them or even Bake them. I am sure you can air fry them too. I have not tried that since I do not own an air fryer. I have tasted air fryer beef burgers however and they were delicious. So, I have no doubt that these Black Bean Burgers will be delicious air fried!

These Black Bean Burgers make for the perfect lunch. You can have them with a bun or without. I prefer to eat black bean burgers for lunch time instead of having red meat at that hour because sometimes red meat during the day can make me sluggish. The day that I made these Black Bean Burgers, I had a lot to get done. Fortunately, the burgers gave me all the energy and nourishment that I needed to power through my busy day.

Since the black bean burger patty was so filling and flavorful, I didn’t need to add any condiments. I only added a bun and lettuce. And, I preferred it that way. I got to taste everything that went into the burger. I was able to limit myself to just one burger. But, I truly wish I made more since I could have eaten more the next day. Maybe next time, I will make a double batch. I am sure my family will love that as well.

I hope you decide to try these Black Bean Burgers and enjoy them just as much as my family and I did. Be sure to comment below what you topped your Black Bean Burgers with. It’s fun to read about how you all choose to serve the recipes posted on this site! Enjoy!

  1. bread crumbs or pulsed oats are mentioned in the preparation section of the recipe, but there is no indication of how much to use, per the list of ingredients. As a matter-of-fact, neither ingredient is listed on the list of ingredients.

They sound yummy, & I think they’d be good topped with CARAMELIZED onions and/or SAUTÉED mushrooms.

  3. You totally missed the bread crumbs for the ingredients. What is the measurement for the breadcrumbs? I would like to make these but need the amount of breadcrumbs. Also, what is hamburger seasoning? Can you buy a food product called “hamburger seasoning?”
